Solar storage was once the topic of mankind’s energy imagination for the future, but Elon Musk’s release of the Tesla Powerwall battery system has made it about the present. If you are looking for energy storage paired with solar panels, then the BSLBATT Powerwall is worth the money. The industry believes that the Powerwall is the best home battery for solar storage. With the Powerwall, you get some of the most advanced storage features and technical specifications at the lowest price. There is no doubt that the Powerwall is an excellent home energy storage solution. It has some incredible features and is reasonably priced. How exactly does that come across? We’ll go through a few questions to illustrate. 1. How do Powerwall batteries work? Essentially, the sun’s rays are captured by solar panels and then converted into energy that can be used in your home. BSLBATT Powerwall is a rechargeable lithium-ion battery system designed to use the electricity generated by the sun through a solar photovoltaic system, which exceeds the amount of power needed by the building during the day to recharge the batteries. As this energy flows into your house, it is used by your devices and any excess energy is stored in the Powerwall. Once the Powerwall is fully charged, the rest of the power your system generates on top of this is sent back to the grid. And when the sun goes down, the weather is bad or there is a power outage (if a back-up gateway is installed) and your solar panels are not producing energy, this stored power can be used to power the building. BSLBATT powerwall systems are designed to work with any solar PV setup as they use AC power (rather than DC) and can therefore be easily retrofitted to an existing solar PV system. The Powerwall is connected directly to the building’s standard electrical equipment, so that when the battery storage runs out of energy, you automatically get the required energy from the national grid if the PV system does not have directly available solar energy. 2. How long can the Powerwall supply power? When planning a home battery storage solution, it’s all about give and take. When designing an energy storage system, it is vital to find a balance between the total capacity of the Powerwall and all the requirements needed to top up the power. Using the BSLATT Powerwall as an example, the length of time that a building can be powered depends on the electricity demand within the building (e.g. lights, appliances and possibly electric vehicles). On average, a household uses 10 kWh (kilowatt hours) every 24 hours (less if solar energy is used on a sunny day). This means that your Powerwall, when fully charged, can power your house for at least a day with its 13.5 kWh of battery storage. Many households also store solar energy while they are away during the day, run their home overnight and then pour the remaining solar power into their electric vehicle. The batteries are then fully charged and the cycle is repeated again the next day. For some businesses, for buildings with greater power requirements, multiple BSLATT Powerwall units can be integrated into your system to increase the available battery storage capacity and can provide instantaneous power. Depending on the number of Powerwall units included in your setup and the electricity demand of your home or business, this may mean that you store enough power to power the building for a longer period of time than a single Powerwall unit. 3. Will the powerwall still work if there is a power failure? Your Powerwall will operate in the event of a grid failure and your house will automatically switch to batteries. If the sun is shining when the grid fails, your solar system will continue to charge the batteries and stop sending any energy to the grid. Powerwall battery will have a "gateway" unit installed inside it, which is located on the input power to the house. If it detects a problem on the grid, a relay will trip and isolate all power in the house from the grid, at which point your house is effectively disconnected from the grid. Once physically disconnected in this way, the unit relays power from the system to the Powerwall and the batteries can be discharged to run the loads in your home, which ensures the safety of line staff and is an automatic process in the event of an interruption to the grid. Know that you will always have power to your home and it provides you with extra security. 4. How long does it take to charge the powerwall with solar energy? This is another question that is difficult to quantify. How long it takes to charge the Powerwall with solar energy really depends on the weather, brightness, shade and outside temperature and on the amount of solar energy you generate, minus the amount consumed by the house. Under ideal conditions with no load and 7.6kW of solar power, the Powerwall can be charged in 2 hours. 5. Is a powerwall necessary for business other than homes? According to statistics, the demand from businesses wishing to combine solar panels and Powerwalls to reduce their electricity bills is increasing. Implementing a battery storage solution for a business can be complex and we only recommend this in certain circumstances. We do not want to sell you a battery storage system that cannot be fully utilised. Solar PV in combination with BSLATT Powerwalls is ideal for businesses where:

  • Consume more at night than during the day (e.g. hotels) or if you are the owner/operator of a home. This means that there is a lot of unused power during the day which can then be used in the evening.

  • Where solar panels generate a lot of excess power (usually a combination of a large battery bank and a smaller daytime load). This ensures that excess power is captured all year round

  • Or that there is a significant difference between daytime and nighttime electricity prices. This allows cheap night-time power to be stored and used to offset expensive imported power.

We do not recommend the use of solar PV in combination with BSLATT Powerwalls for businesses with: High daytime loads and/or low solar power generation. You will capture some solar energy in the middle of the day on the sunniest day of the year, but for the rest of the year, there will not be enough excess solar energy to charge the batteries.
